Thinking of Moving from NYC to New Jersey — Any Tips or Things to Know?

Hey everyone, I’m in the early stages of planning a move from New York City to New Jersey and would love to hear from folks who’ve done the same. I’ve lived in NYC for most of my adult life, but with rent going up and space feeling tighter than ever, I’m seriously considering crossing the river.

I’m not totally sure which part of NJ to focus on yet. I work remotely most of the time, but I’d still like to be close enough to the city to visit friends or head in for a meeting without it being a nightmare. I’ve heard mixed things about towns like Jersey City, Hoboken, Montclair, and Maplewood. Affordability, commute options, and overall vibe are big factors for me. I’m also wondering how big of a culture shock it is to go from NYC to the suburbs.

Would love to hear about your experience moving from NYC to New Jersey—what you loved, what you didn’t expect, and any advice you’d give someone thinking about making the switch. Did it feel like a downgrade, or did you end up loving it more than you thought?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Moving from NY to New Jersey can be a great decision, but it's important to research towns that fit your lifestyle. Commuting options vary, so proximity to train lines can make a big difference. Property taxes are higher in some areas, so budget accordingly. Enjoy more space and quieter neighborhoods while still being close to the city for work or entertainment.
